And so we come to the end of Billy Beane week here in the Sports Buff baseball universe. One may question whether Mr. Beane is really worth celebrating as his teams have only reached the Playoffs in one of the past five seasons and the A’s are currently in last place in the NL West. Americans like winners, but I think even most Americans can appreciate that Beane has done as much as he could with the deck stacked against him. Like a mid-major coach who consistently gets his team into the Big Dance (no, not you, John Calipari) or Stone Cold Steve Austin against Brett Hart in Wrestlemania 13, we can appreciate the effort if not the end result. ... Keep your eye on Iowa State RB Alexander Robinson this season as he develops into a potent weapon in the team's new spread offense. Robinson, coming off a 700 yard rushing season, could flourish in the new offense.
Insight: Despite using a spread offense, the Cyclones don't have all the passing parts to make it flourish...yet. Given that, expect Robinson to be heavily involved in the offense and could catch 35 to 50 balls this season and approach 1,000 yards rushing. He is a nice little sleeper to keep your eyes one.
